How to Install a Tumblr Theme

Installing a theme that you’ve bought directly from Tumblr is easy. Just click the Install button and choose the blog you’d like to apply the theme to. However, if you purchased your new theme elsewhere, you might wonder how to get things set up.

Today we’re taking a look at how to install a Tumblr theme you’ve bought from anywhere else!

How to Install a Tumblr Theme

Don’t worry, it’s easy to install a purchased Tumblr theme on your current blog (especially if it’s one of our premium Tumblr themes from Themelantic!) Here’s how you can do it in four quick steps:

1. Edit Theme

Log into your Tumblr account and you should see the Edit Theme link just on the top right corner of the window.

2. Click Edit HTML

On the top of the Customizer panel, there’s the Edit HTML link. Click this to open the code panel.

3. Replace the HTML Code

Select all content of the Edit HTML panel, delete it, then write a period (.) and click Update Preview. Hit Save. This should reset all previous colors and preferences of the last theme.

Then, select all code of the new theme, delete the period in the code window, and paste the new code. Hit Update Preview then Save.

4. Customize Your New Theme

Once your new theme is installed, just click the left arrow and all your new options are available for you to configure your new theme.

You can always rely on Tumblr’s theme recovery page if you want to revert back to your previous theme and make a mistake!
